Fernando Villavicencio, candidato a la presidencia de Ecuador por el proyecto Gente Buena y Movimiento Construye, murió en la tarde del miércoles durante un ataque en el norte de Quito. Este ocurrió en un mitín, a unos días de que se celebren las elecciones. Fernando Villavicencio, candidato presidencial de Ecuador, fue asesinado en un atentado este miércoles, en el norte de Quito, durante un evento político. Así lo confirmaron el presidente Guillermo Lasso, el ministro del Interior Juan Zapata y miembros de campaña. Villavicencio, candidato de Movimiento Construye, se encontraba junto a un grupo de simpatizantes en el coliseo del colegio Anderson cuando se escucharon ráfagas de disparos, según miembros de la campaña. Christian Zurita, periodista y allegado a Villavicencio, confirmó a CNN la muerte. También en su cuenta de X, antes conocida como Twitter, dijo que fueron “sicarios”. Las ambulancias de los servicios de emergencia se desplegaron hasta el lugar después del atentado, que ocurrió aproximadamente a las 6:20 p.m., hora loca (7:20 p.m., hora de Miami). El candidato fue retirado de la zona. También se reportan varias personas heridas. La Fiscalía General informó que investiga el asesinato de Villavicencio: "Una agente fiscal, en conjunto con criminalistas de @PoliciaEcuador toman procedimiento en la casa de salud donde yace la víctima". El presidente de Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, expresó en X su indignación y consternación por el asesinato de Villavicencio. "Mi solidaridad y mis condolencias con su esposa y sus hijas. Por su memoria y por su lucha, les aseguro que este crimen no va a quedar impune", escribió el mandatario. Además informó que "el Gabinete de Seguridad se reunirá en pocos minutos en Carondelet". Y concluyó: "El crimen organizado ha llegado muy lejos, pero les va a caer todo el peso de la ley". Villavicencio nació en 1963 en Chimborazo. Era periodista y crítico del correísmo y del Gobierno de Lasso. Fue uno de los personajes más visibles de denuncias de corrupción en el ámbito petrolero, en el ámbito energético. Incluso el caso Odebrecht en Ecuador tuvo algún impulso en su momento con las denuncias realizadas por Villavicencio, que además fue parte de la Asamblea Nacional, que fue destituida en meses pasados.
